Boy in the Black Shorts

This morning, I awoke full of sunshine and possibility. Gratitude will do that. As I stretched, face down in my pillow, I thanked God for my amazing husband. I met him 22 years ago, today.

June 21, 1991 was a pivotal day in my life. When I walked into my best friend's backyard, I saw a group of guys playing "Navy Seals" in her pool. They were JROTC cadets, so a simple game of Marco Polo wouldn't do. As John jumped off the diving rock, I asked my friend about the boy in the black shorts. The sight of him made my heart flutter. He surfaced in the pool, gazed into my green eyes, and my world has never been the same.

This afternoon, my husband called me from Afghanistan. Those were the best 7 minutes of my day. We reminisced about the first time we laid eyes on each other and how we never could have guessed where our path would lead. We only knew we wanted to walk it together.

  3. It is hard to believe the amazing adventure that began on that ordinary summer afternoon twenty-two years ago. We have had the opportunity to celebrate many events in that same backyard over the years. When I think back to that summer I have many, many great memories. I am very glad to have spent that summer and all the summers since with you my friend.
